General Will

Theory
General Will
Jurist
Jean Jacques Rousseau
Description

Law is the expression of the general will (volonté générale) of the people, always directed at the common good. Rousseau distinguishes it from the mere 'will of all' (the sum of private interests); under the social contract, obeying the general will reconciles individual freedom with collective sovereignty.
